Jonathan Hoel is a Madison, WI based saxophonist and composer. Comfortable in all styles of music, his true passion is musical improvisation in all its forms. His parents, though not musicians, had a deep love of music and records were always being played in the home. His grandfather was a jazz drummer who possessed a huge vinyl collection and a drum set in the basement. In high school, Jon studied sax and jazz improvisation with Anders Svanoe. He also got to spend a summer studying with jazz legend Frank Morgan. Jonathan attended college at University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point where he studied saxophone with David Hastings and jazz theory/improvisation with Mathew Buchman. He was a recipient of both the John Radd Memorial Jazz Scholarship and the Anne Schierl Fine Arts Scholarship.
Jon's current projects include his trio Nuggernaut and funk project Better Yeti. He has also been associated with the following acts: The Mustache, Que Flavor, Roots Collective, Vibe Syndicate, Mambo Blue, Megan Bobo & the Lux, Big Mouth Jazz Collective, Otis and the Alligators, Big Payback, Tweed Funk, Natty Nation w/ Kevin Kinsella. He has been lucky enough to share the stage with some of his idols including John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Poncho Sanchez, Matt Wilson, and Andrew D'Angelo.

Andrew Baldwin is a recent graduate from the University of Wisconsin - Madison with a master of music in percussion performance under Anthony Di Sanza, Thomas Ross, and Todd Hammes. He studied music both within and outside of the western classical tradition with a focus on Afro-Cuban and Brazilian (Maracatu, Regge, Pagode, and Rio) drumming,as well as developing a unique voice with his jazz playing and compositions, including trips to New York to perform at Carnegie Hall with the Symphonic Wind ensemble and to Beijing and Shenyang, China to perform with the UW Madison Percussion Ensemble. Andrew has also had the pleasure to play alongisde Ohio jazz violinist Christian Howes, Las Vegas jazz vibraphonist Christian Tambour, Roy “Futureman” Wooten, and Sō Percussion. In 2017, Andrew played percussion and vibraphone on the soundtrack for the film "Brawl in Cell Block 99”. He teaches and coaches jazz and percussion at the UW Whitewater Summer Band Camps and has acted as a collaborative musician at the Interlochen Center of the Arts in Michigan.
Pieces for the inDIGenous Jazz series showcase the artist’s compositional tastes and their expansions since moving to and studying in Madison (UW Madison). He writes, “As a native Wisconsinite and one who holds Madison near and dear to his heart, the potential to share my music with the community that has fostered so much of my musical growth is beyond thrilling.”

The Gadjos return with new violinist, Rin Q Ribble who has brought a funky new sound to the original line up. The Gadjo Players were originally started by Ben Johnson (bass), Matt Krueger (mandolin & percussion), Nate Hess (mandolin) and Mike Kratochwill (guitar) in 2006. They have been pushing the boundaries of what this unique group of instruments can do since the beginning. Giants Causeway, the feature track on the band’s first album Between Two Waters, embodies the original inspiration that started the band, the genre of dawg music made popular by David Grisman. To date The Gadjo Players offer 22 original compositions ranging from funky groove, dawg music, jazz, eclectic and just about everything in between. Recording on a second album has begun and is hoped to be released sometime next year.

Richard Hildner is a Peruvian-American musician born in Madison that grew up playing Peruvian folk music with his family. His interests have since expanded to include jazz and other American and Latin-American music forms. In this concert, he presents original compositions which represent these innately complex and diverse musical worlds coming together and with the help of these amazing like-minded musicians, this presentation will reflect this process. Hilder notes, "My goal also is to highlight to Madison audiences that even though Latin-American communities in Madison aren't as visible and are marginalized economically and socially compared to the dominant community and culture, they are nonetheless weaving part of the cultural tapestry of this city just as much as anyone else." The evening will include two sets of a total of 10 original compositions with some different instrumentation for different pieces including 1 or 2 solo guitar pieces The rhythms will range from Afro-Peruvian festejo and Andean Huayno to Latin Jazz and Afro-Cuban son. He continues, "These pieces were composed by me at various times in my life out of a desire to create something that can bring me inspiration and hope."
