ABOUT MARQUIS HILL

At age 25, Marquis Hill is already a well-known name on the Chicago Jazz Scene. After recieving a Bachelor degree in Music Education/Jazz Studies, and studying privately at Northern Illinois University, he started performing heavily in Chicago. He has toured the U.S and abroad with many different artists and groups: Sirens of Sound, The Delisfort Project, Chicago 12, Bebop Brass, Ronald Carter Big Band, New Horizons. Hill has released 2 albums as a leader, "New Gospel", and "Sounds of The City".

The objective of his performance is to take listeners on a musical journey through “My Chicago”. “Sounds Of The City, A Southside Story”.  In his own words: “Being born and raised in the city of Chicago has influenced my musical approach in a vast number of ways. From the way that I love simple melodic melodies, to the way that I light up every time I hear a “Chicago style Blues.” The amount of jazz history that has derived from the inner city and the south side of Chicago has also played a major role in my musical and conceptual approaches. My Chicago experience has motivated me to put together this project and compose a series of compositions that represent my “South Side Story.” Each piece symbolizes a specific moment in my life that has helped to shape and mold me into the type of man and musician I am today.”

Chris McBride

ABOUT CHRIS McBRIDE (alto sax)

Superb alto saxophonist, Christopher McBride has been slowly but steadily turning heads with his ubiquitous work as an invaluable sideman since the mid-aughts. Applauded for his ability to play in all musical situations, McBride has the ability to unleash a fiery attack and serrated tone, but on his recent album he explores a more measured, mellow sound heavily influenced by contemporary R&B—with a strong shot of Cannonball Adderley’s post-bop sensuality–but his improvising is still rigorous and cogent.

Since 2007, Christopher has been in high demand as a musician and clinician, performing and teaching in Illinois, Missouri and various states throughout the country. In addition, he has shared his musical gift with audiences across the globe, performing in China, Ireland, England, Italy, Portugal, Scotland, Switzerland, and Spain. Throughout his career, Christopher has played with musical greats including Billy Preston, Antonio Hart, John Clayton, Jimmy Heath, Bobby Broom, Percy Gray, Roy Hargrove, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Guy Sebastian, Jennifer Hudson, 88 Keys and Milton Mustafa. He now currently resides in Brooklyn, New York.

ABOUT MAKAYA McCRAVEN (drums)

Born in Paris to musician parents, Makaya McCraven, drummer, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist, has been impressing crowds since he was a young child. His explosive drumming blends world rhythms and jazz traditions with a hip hop and rock attitude. With parents as professional musicians, Makaya Makaya was touring the world from birth. He has toured and performed with jazz greats such as Archie Shepp, Yusef Lateef, Charles Neville, Billy Taylor and many more. He has shared the stage with such acts as Wutang, Digable Planets, The Pharcyde, Mixmaster Mike, and the Wailers.

Chicago” series at Millennium Park, and toured with the Occidental Brothers and Corey Wilkes. In describing Makaya’s debut album, Split Decision, Neil Tesser writes, “The music . . . shimmers with pop energy while retaining a resilient jazz core–a fresh take on the age-old piano trio, catapulted by McCraven’s propulsive percussion into an orbit that few first-time groups ever achieve.”
