ABOUT RUSS JOHNSON
Trumpeter Russ Johnson is a recent Midwest transplant after spending 23 years as an important member of New York City’s jazz community. He has 7 recordings as a leader or co-leader and performed on more than 75 recordings as a sideman. Russ has worked alongside many of the legendary figures in jazz including Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow, Bill Frisell, and Joe Lovano. In addition, Russ has recorded and/or performed with a long list of the most prominent musicians currently on the international jazz scene, including Myra Melford, Ken Vandermark, and Tony Malaby. Russ has performed in more than 40 countries across the globe.
The Russ Johnson Quartet is his latest project & features 3 Chicago musicians (Jason Stein – bass clarinet; Anton Hatwich – bass; and Tim Daisy – drums) with international acclaim. This group recently performed at the Umbrella Festival in Chicago in November of 2013, and the 2014 Chicago Jazz Festival in Millennium Park. Their new recording “Meeting Point” was released in May of 2014 on RelaYRecordings. “Meeting Point” received 4 ½ stars in the May issue of Down Beat magazine & has been listed among the “Best CD’s of 2014” in the January 2015 issue of Down Beat. Magnet Magazine recently placed “Meeting Point” on its “Top 10 CD’s of 2014” in the jazz/improvisation category.
October of 2014 saw the release of “Still Out to Lunch,” on the German label Enja. The group performs the music of Eric Dolphy, and recently headlined “Edge Fest” in Ann Arbor Michigan and has a January 2015performance scheduled at NYC’s “Winter Jazz Fest.”
ABOUT JASON STEIN (bass clarinet)
Born in 1976 and is originally from Long Island, New York. Stein is one of the few musicians working today to focus entirely on the bass clarinet as a jazz and improvisational instrument. He studied at Bennington College with Charles Gayle and Milford Graves, and at the University of Michigan with Donald Walden and Ed Sarath. In 2005, Stein relocated to Chicago and has since recorded for such labels as Leo, Delmark, Atavistic, 482 Music and Clean Feed. Stein has performed throughout the US and Europe, including performances in festivals in Lisbon, Cracow, Utrecht, Barcelona, Debreccen and Ljubljana. He has had the opportunity to perform with a number of exciting local and international musicians including: Michael Moore, Jeff Parker, Oscar Noriega, Rudi Mahall, Ken Vandermark, Rob Mazurek, Jeb Bishop, IngebrigtHaker-Flaten, UrsLeimgruber, PandelisKarayorgis, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Tony Buck, Eric Boren, Kent Kessler, Tobias Delius, Michael Zerang, Michael Vatcher, Peter Brotzman, and Wilbert DeJoode.
ABOUT ANTON HATWICH (bass)
Bassist, composer, and improviser Anton Hatwich has lived in Chicago since 2003. He was born and raised in Rockford, IL, growing up in a musical family. Anton moved to Iowa City, IA in 1995 and lived there until 2002, earning a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Iowa. After graduation Hatwich taught for two years as Visiting Artist in Music at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA. At the UI he studied bass with Dr. Diana Gannett, jazz and improvisation with John Rapson, and also gained valuable experience playing with the school's renown Center for New Music, under the direction of David Gompper. Outside of class, Anton was active in the local music scene. Of particular lasting importance was his work with clarinettist, saxophonist, and composer Robert Paredes, with whom Anton took first steps in the world of free improvisation.
In late 2002 Hatwich started spending large amounts of time amongst Chicago's improvised music community, hanging out all night with his new friends at concerts and bars, and crashing on his brother's couch. One thing led to another, and by spring of 2003 he was playing so much in Chicago that it made sense to move there. Since that time he has played in endlessly varied groups of (mostly) improvising musicians, with some combinations sticking around longer than others. A partial list of his collaborators includes Frank Rosaly, Keefe Jackson, Aram Shelton, Nick Mazzarella, Russ Johnson, Tim Daisy, Jason Stein, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Josh Berman, and Paul Giallorenzo. Anton has recorded a number of critically acclaimed albums and toured nationally and internationally. He has appeared at a handful of the major jazz festivals, including the Chicago Jazz Festival, the Monterey Jazz Festival, the Ring Ring Festival in Belgrade, the Umbrella Festival, and the UlrichsbergerKaleidophon Festival in Austria.
ABOUT TIMOTHY DAISY (percussion/composition)
Tim Daisy is a Chicago based percussionist, composer and educator working in the
fields of improvised and composed music. Born and raised in northeastern Illinois,
he moved to Chicago in 1997 and has since performed, recorded, and toured with many
acclaimed musicians and ensembles from both the USA and abroad. Tim also maintains
an active touring schedule, working with a number of musicians and ensembles and has
traveled extensively throughout North America and Europe. Working in a number of
different environments, he has composed for solo percussion, chamber groups, jazz
ensembles, dance, theater, and film.
Tim has had the fortunate experience to work with many of the most cutting edge
musicians currently working in the filed of improvised music including: Ken
Vandermark, Jeb Bishop , Fred Lonberg-Holm, James Falzone, Dave Rempis, Steve Swell,
John Tchicai, Mars Williams, Joe McPhee, Matt Bauder, Michael Zerang, and Frank
Rosaly, and Aram Shelton.
In 2001 Tim joined the acclaimed ensemble The Vandermark 5, making 6 recordings with
the group, as well as the 12cd “Alchemia” box set, documenting the groups week long
residency at the Alchemia Club in Krakow, Poland.
In 2002 he was named one of 13 “Drummers For The Future” by Downbeat Magazine.
In 2010 Tim was commisioned to compose an original percussion score for “Marchland.”
A new work for modern dance choreographed by Carrie Hanson and performed by the
Seldoms at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
Tim has performed drums as well as showcased his original compositions at many
festivals throughout North America and Europe including: The Newport Jazz Fetival,
The Chicago Jazz Festival, The Umbrella Music Festival in Chicgo, The Wels Music
Unlimited Festival in Wels Austria, The North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands
and the Suoni Per Il Popolo Festival in Montreal, Krakow Jazz Fall in Krakow Poland,
and the Monterrey Jazz Festival.
Along with his busy performance and composing schedule, Tim finds the time to teach
private drum instruction both at his studio in Chicago as well as throughout the
Chicago metro area.
In 2011 Tim received both the New Music America “Composers Assistance Award” as well
as the American Society of Composers Authors, and Publishers “ASCAP Plus Award”
recognizing his original contributions to American music.
